Meurtre télécommandé

by Paul Kirchner and Janwillem van de Wetering

SHORTLISTED FOR THE PRIX POLAR SNCF AT THE 2023 ANGOULEME INTERNATIONAL COMICS FESTIVAL

Translated from the English by Patrick Marcel

Maine, 1980s. A gallery of colorful characters live around a quiet, unspoiled bay. Mr. Jones, an oil tycoon planning to build a refinery, is murdered by a remote-controlled plane while on a fishing trip. Who killed Jones? Mr. Kane, the local farmer who takes a dim view of the newcomers? Was it Valerie, the former “fille de joie” who had turned to gardening, but was also a bit of a witch? Joe McLoon, the entrenched desperado surrounded by motorcycles, guns and mistresses? Or Steve Goodrich, the retired Hollywood actor for whom the world is a movie set? There's no shortage of suspects, each with their own motive. Subjected to the scrutinizing gaze and psychic powers of Inspector Jim Brady, each in turn reveals the secrets of his unconscious, allowing the reader to piece together the plot.

The result of a collaboration between Paul Kirchner and Dutch crime writer Janwillem Van de Wetering, Meurtre télécommandé was first published in the Netherlands in 1984, then in the USA in 1986. To this day, it remains the only full-length story by the creator of The Bus and Dope Rider. The custom-written script dissects the American soul, exposing its contradictions and contradictions. It also allows Paul Kirchner to give substance to Jim Brady's visions through hallucinatory sequences in spectacular splash pages. They imbue the investigation with a mysterious atmosphere reminiscent of the TV series Twin Peaks, released a few years later.

In an afterword written especially for this edition, Paul Kirchner retraces the genesis of the album and paints a touching and fascinating portrait of his collaborator and friend Janwillem van de Wetering.
